    Uses of peer assessment in database teaching and learning

    This discussion paper introduces three very different methods and contexts for the use of peer assessment in introductory database classes, each of which is supported by different learning software tools. In the first case study, at Glasgow Caledonian University, Contributing Student Pedagogy is used, where students contribute to the learning of others through the collaborative creation of a bank of self-assessment questions. This is supported by the Peerwise software tool. Secondly, at the University of Strathclyde, students undertake formative assessment of others in providing feedback on an initial element of a larger coursework assessment. A number of virtual learning environments (VLEs) are capable of supporting this method through customisable discussion fora. Finally, at the Abertay University, peer and self assessment are used in a group project to adjust the group grade for individual students. This is effected through the use of the WebPA software tool

    Conjugative transfer frequencies of mef(A)-containing Tn1207.3 to macrolide-susceptible Streptococcus pyogenes belonging to different emm types

    The aim of this study was to examine the gene transfer potential of mef(A)-containing Tn120.3 to macrolide-susceptible Streptococcus pyogenes belonging to different emm types. Using the filter mating technique, Tn1207.3 was transferred by conjugation to 23 macrolide-susceptible recipients representing 11 emm types. PCR analysis confirmed the presence of the mef(A) gene and the comEC junction regions of the Tn1207.3 insertion in resultant transconjugants. Significant variation was found in the transfer frequency of Tn1207.3 to different Strep. pyogenes strains, and this phenomenon may contribute to the differences in mef(A) frequency observed among clinical isolates. Significance and Impact of the Study: The spread of antimicrobial resistance among pathogenic bacteria is an important problem, but the mechanisms of horizontal transfer between strains and species are often poorly understood. For instance, little is known on how macrolide resistance spreads between strains of the human pathogen Strep. pyogenes and why certain strains more commonly display resistance than others. Here, we show that Strep. pyogenes strains vary greatly in their ability to acquire a transposon encoding macrolide resistance by horizontal gene transfer in vitro. These data provide a novel insight into the transfer of antibiotic resistance between bacterial strains and offer an explanation for the differences in the frequency of resistance determinates and resistance seen among clinical isolates. © 2014 The Authors Letters in Applied Microbiology

    Don’t get involved: an examination of how public sector organisations in England are involving disabled people in the Disability Equality Duty

    The Disability Equality Duty (DED) came into force in December 2006. It stipulated that all public sector organisations were to develop policies to promote the equality of disabled people as staff members, consumers or visitors. Its emergence comes as part of a network of social policies developed over the last 20 years to promote disability rights and citizenship in the UK. However unlike previous legislation, the DED set in place the need for organisations to be pro-active in their policies and work with disabled people to move towards change in public sector cultures and working practices. This article reports on this early stage of implementation in England. Findings show that whilst some progress has been made in securing change, practice varied greatly. Therefore if a fundamental change in the culture of work and service provision is to be secured, this key requirement will need to be given a higher priority by organisations

    A geometric view of cryptographic equation solving

    This paper considers the geometric properties of the Relinearisation algorithm and of the XL algorithm used in cryptology for equation solving. We give a formal description of each algorithm in terms of projective geometry, making particular use of the Veronese variety. We establish the fundamental geometrical connection between the two algorithms and show how both algorithms can be viewed as being equivalent to the problem of finding a matrix of low rank in the linear span of a collection of matrices, a problem sometimes known as the MinRank problem. Furthermore, we generalise the XL algorithm to a geometrically invariant algorithm, which we term the GeometricXL algorithm. The GeometricXL algorithm is a technique which can solve certain equation systems that are not easily soluble by the XL algorithm or by Groebner basis methods

    Macrophage network dynamics depend on haptokinesis for optimal local surveillance

    Macrophages are key immune cells with important roles for tissue surveillance in almost all mammalian organs. Cellular networks made up of many individual macrophages allow for optimal removal of dead cell material and pathogens in tissues. However, the critical determinants that underlie these population responses have not been systematically studied. Here, we investigated how cell shape and the motility of individual cells influences macrophage network responses in 3D culture settings and in mouse tissues. We show that surveying macrophage populations can tolerate lowered actomyosin contractility, but cannot easily compensate for a lack of integrin-mediated adhesion. Although integrins were dispensable for macrophage chemotactic responses, they were crucial to control cell movement and protrusiveness for optimal surveillance by a macrophage population. Our study reveals that β1 integrins are important for maintaining macrophage shape and network sampling efficiency in mammalian tissues, and sets macrophage motility strategies apart from the integrin-independent 3D migration modes of many other immune cell subsets

    Re-Inventing Public Education:The New Role of Knowledge in Education Policy-Making

    This article focuses on the changing role of knowledge in education policy making within the knowledge society. Through an examination of key policy texts, the Scottish case of Integrated Children Services provision is used to exemplify this new trend. We discuss the ways in which knowledge is being used in order to re-configure education as part of a range of public services designed to meet individuals' needs. This, we argue, has led to a 'scientization' of education governance where it is only knowledge, closely intertwined with action (expressed as 'measures') that can reveal problems and shape solutions. The article concludes by highlighting the key role of knowledge policy and governance in orienting education policy making through a re-invention of the public role of education

    What are the holistic care impacts among individuals living through the COVID-19 pandemic in residential or community care settings? An integrative systematic review.

    The objective of this study was to critically synthesise evidence in relation to the holistic care impacts (physical, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental well-being) among individuals living in residential aged-care facilities (RACFs) with restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. An integrative systematic review followed a pre-registered protocol and has been reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) Guidelines. Electronic databases were searched from inception to June 2022. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies were included. All articles were double-screened according to a pre-determined eligibility criterion. The review process was managed using Covidence systematic review software. Data from the studies were extracted, methodological quality appraisal conducted and a narrative synthesis conducted. 18 studies were included. The impact of restrictive practices and periods of lockdown impacted older people on all levels of individual quality-of-life. With or without COVID-19, residents experienced functional decline and many experienced malnutrition, increased incontinence, increased pain, and poorer general health and significant psychological distress. Depression increased with reduced social contact, as did anxiety and loneliness. Some residents spoke of suicidal ideation. It is highly plausible that further outbreaks may prompt knee-jerk reactions from public health departments and governing bodies to continue to restrict and lockdown facilities. Public health COVID-19 outbreak policy for aged care across the globe will need to consider the benefits verses risk debate, given the findings uncovered in this review. These findings showed that it is vital that policy considers quality-of-life domains - not solely survival rates

    Derandomized Construction of Combinatorial Batch Codes

    Combinatorial Batch Codes (CBCs), replication-based variant of Batch Codes introduced by Ishai et al. in STOC 2004, abstracts the following data distribution problem: nn data items are to be replicated among mm servers in such a way that any kk of the nn data items can be retrieved by reading at most one item from each server with the total amount of storage over mm servers restricted to NN. Given parameters m,c,m, c, and kk, where cc and kk are constants, one of the challenging problems is to construct cc-uniform CBCs (CBCs where each data item is replicated among exactly cc servers) which maximizes the value of nn. In this work, we present explicit construction of cc-uniform CBCs with Ω(mc1+1k)\Omega(m^{c-1+{1 \over k}}) data items. The construction has the property that the servers are almost regular, i.e., number of data items stored in each server is in the range [ncmn2ln(4m),ncm+n2ln(4m)][{nc \over m}-\sqrt{{n\over 2}\ln (4m)}, {nc \over m}+\sqrt{{n \over 2}\ln (4m)}]. The construction is obtained through better analysis and derandomization of the randomized construction presented by Ishai et al. Analysis reveals almost regularity of the servers, an aspect that so far has not been addressed in the literature. The derandomization leads to explicit construction for a wide range of values of cc (for given mm and kk) where no other explicit construction with similar parameters, i.e., with n=Ω(mc1+1k)n = \Omega(m^{c-1+{1 \over k}}), is known. Finally, we discuss possibility of parallel derandomization of the construction
